about

Plonsey writes: During the mid-to-late 2000's, Daniel Popsicle met once a week at ZOKA, the studio/home of Michael Zelner and Suki O'Kane for rehearsal/recording. From 2004 - 2007, I was writing a collection of pieces which were at first called Simple Music, but which were renamed Color Music, after their first performance at the Museum of Children's Art in Oakland. I would bring a handful of new pieces to rehearsal, and we'd play through each one a few times, until it sounded "good,"recording the entire session. Of course the first takes of each piece were quite rough. I don't know that it's any better or worse than any other night, but for some reason, I decided that "this CD sounds great as is," and that the world of serious listeners would enjoy it, unedited, as natural, unfiltered music. Others convinced me that this was a bad idea. Well, obviously they didn't convince me, but they were themselves convinced, and without any enthusiasm from my primary audience, I refrained from releasing this. Until now. Understand that I don't consider this recording as part of the genre of "complete sessions," which collect multiple consecutive takes of a single piece by a jazz artist, most notably Charlie Parker. Although, now that I think of it, it kinda is. But the intent is different: the implication of the Parker releases is that each take could easily have been the one issued, whereas here, it's pretty obvious that the final take of each of the four pieces is best. What you will hear instead is gradual development.

You'll maybe think of Sun Ra, both because of my approach to "jazz," which is also a bit off; a bit clunky, and a bit from outer space. And, of course, they've now released rehearsal tapes by the Arkestra. I listened to part of one once, and enjoyed it, so I'm hopeful that you will enjoy this.

about

Dan Plonsey El Cerrito, California

Dan Plonsey is a composer and saxophonist. Inspired by music from many times and places, his compositions are irrationally rational, simple-minded, and melodic. The world which enjoys his music celebrates imperfection. Plonsey considers his works the result of being "at least slightly out of step with nearly everything. It draws upon all of my weaknesses as much as upon my strengths." ... more
